Nimbin History

Over the 30 years since the Aquarius Festival and the subsequent changes to the region, Nimbin has become an icon of Australian cultural history. So many of the values held then are now part of our Australian way of life. People from all over the world gathered here and shared a spirit, commonly expressed, “from our hearts, through our hands, for the earth…all the world together!”. Under threat of war, Aquarius sought the pathways of peace and the new settlers who ‘recycled the town’ lived with their hearts on show. Aquarius, a true Rainbow Gathering, was perhaps the first Australian event that sought permission from the Traditional Owners, Bundjalung People, for the use of the land.
